A shining treasure

St John's Chapel in the cathedral cemetery opens its doors in parallel to the David Schnell exhibition in the Kunsthalle Naumburg.

He is one of the most prominent contemporary artists in Germany: Leipzig painter David Schnell. He will be exhibiting his works at the Kunsthalle Naumburg from 30 August to 20 October 2024. Another exhibition venue is St John's Chapel at the cathedral cemetery.

"I am incredibly happy that the gallery owner, Ritchie Riediger, who opened the Kunsthalle in Naumburg last year, has been able to persuade David Schnell to exhibit in our cathedral city," says Dr Holger Kunde, Director of the Vereinigte Domstifter. "We are delighted to be able to support the exhibition with David Schnell's windows in St John's Chapel," continued Dr Kunde.

Naumburg Cathedral Cemetery is home to a special treasure: St John's Chapel. The chapel, which was originally located to the south of the cathedral, was built in the 13th century and has stood in the cathedral cemetery since 1864. The interior not only features a vaulted ceiling in three bays with skilfully crafted keystones and foliage capitals, but also impressive stained glass windows by the artist David Schnell.

The Leipzig-based artist created the windows in 2014 for the celebrated exhibition "Highlights. Masterpieces of contemporary stained glass in Naumburg Cathedral." The windows were realised in collaboration with Derix Glasstudios Taunusstein and were able to remain in the chapel after the exhibition thanks to the kindness of the artist and Galerie EIGEN + ART Leipzig/Berlin as well as a generous private donation from Freyburg.

The windows can now be experienced again by visitors from 30 August to 20 October 2024 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. in parallel with David Schnell's exhibition at the Kunsthalle Naumburg.
