Like all other cultural institutions in Germany, we have closed Merseburg Cathedral and Naumburg Cathedral for visitors from 2 November 2020 until probably 31 January 2021. Furthermore, all events planned for the period will be cancelled. Also all conferences, educational offers of the KinderDomBauhütte and the KinderDomusMerseburch will be cancelled during this period. Scientific enquiries to the archives and libraries of Vereinigte Domstifter are still guaranteed, and visits are also possible - by appointment. Church services will continue to take place.
"This is again incredibly difficult for us as a foundation that lives largely from visitor income. In recent months we have again been able to welcome tens of thousands of visitors to our cathedrals in Naumburg and Merseburg, and there was great hope that this will continue to be possible," said the director of Vereinigte Domstifter Dr Holger Kunde, following the decision of the German Federal Government and the Federal States on Wednesday.
"Despite the good visitor numbers in summer, we were far from being able to compensate for the losses caused by the closure in spring and are more than ever dependent on the promised aid. It is also difficult for us to put the employees of the Visitor Service back on short-time work. We now hope that the measures will be effective and that we will be able to reopen in December," Dr Kunde continued.
Guests can contact the visitor centre for questions regarding changes in reservations.
