CLUNY & CÎTEAUX
Ecstasy and asceticism in Gregorian chant

With the monasteries of CLUNY and CÎTEAUX, Burgundy in the 12th century is home to two equally important and different reform movements of medieval monasticism. On the one hand, the Benedictine "monastic empire" of CLUNY with its imposing monastery town and abbots who promoted art and science and saw the right path to God in the ornate decoration of the church interior and liturgy, including their singing - on the other hand, CÎTEAUX as the birthplace of the new Cistercian order:Cistercians, who, in sharp criticism of Cluny, propagated asceticism and the renunciation of everything superfluous as a monastic ideal and also reformed the chorale in the process.

The monumental churches of both monasteries no longer exist and their original sound has been lost. The ORDO VIRTUTUM ensemble set out in search of the authentic acoustics and reconstructed them virtually in a research project at the University of Tübingen.
