Impression and devotion: A dedication to Max Klinger
Special exhibition of the Saxony-Anhalt Arts Foundation
12th September to 31st October 2020
The sculptor, painter and graphic artist Max Klinger was and still is a strong and inscrutable artistic personality. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, the Saxony-Anhalt Arts Foundation , in cooperation with the Villa Romana in Florence, initiated the project "Impression and devotion: A dedication to Max Klinger", in which the four contemporary artists Mariechen Danz, Ilko Koestler, Yorgos Sapountzis and Barbara Wege received an eight-month scholarship to explore Klinger's multifaceted oeuvre and to allow the impulses to flow into their own artistic work. The resulting works are now being exhibited in Naumburg Cathedral.
Parallel exhibitions
Corresponding to this exhibition, his last etching cycle is shown in the nearby seat of the Higher Regional Court of Saxony-Anhalt, whose forecourt is decorated by Klinger's "Abundantia" fountain. This is the first time that the 46 etchings of the "Zelt" cycle from the collection of the Naumburg City Museum (a permanent loan from the Naumburg Museum Society) will be on display in their entirety in Naumburg.
At the same time, the Arts Foundation invites you to the third station, the Max Klinger House in Großjena. In the ambience of Klingers' country house and as part of the permanent exhibition there on his life and work, Mariechen Danz reminds us of his long-time partner Elsa Asenijeff with a textile work.
The exhibition course was curated by Angelika Stepken, director of the Villa Romana in Florence.
