Historical stocks of the newspaper Naumburger Tageblatt digitally available thanks to a cooperation

Thanks to a cooperation between Vereinigte Domstifter, the Naumburg City Archives and the Thuringian University and State Library, over the past four years it has been possible to digitize a large part of the historical stocks of the Naumburg daily newspaper and its 19th century predecessors and make them freely accessible in an online portal. The financing of the joint project was largely made possible by a grant from the Springer Foundation.

Matthias Ludwig, head of the Naumburg Cathedral Monastery Archive and Library, is very pleased with the completion of the project: "We have made it possible, solely through donations and the acquisition of third-party funds, to have digitized all the stocks of the Tageblatt that are available in the city archive and the Cathedral Monastery Archive. I consider this a tremendous progress."

Albrecht Günther, head of the editorial staff of the Naumburger Tageblatt, is also enthusiastic about the digitization: "The fact that these collections could be preserved and made usable for posterity is a great gift. There is so much history in these editions, which were severely endangered by considerable damage. It is wonderful that history is not lost".

As the newspaper's chief editor, Albrecht Günther himself regularly uses the online archive for research. And there are also many Naumburgers who appreciate the digitalized editions of the Tageblatt. One of them is Cornel Szkasko, he has already written a Naumburg Fire Prevention and City Chronicle and is currently in the process of expanding it. For him, the online archive is a gift: "I have a job and I just can't manage to sit down in the city archive after work and spend a long time looking through the issues. Thanks to the digitalization, I can browse the Naumburger Tageblatt free of charge and without being bound to opening hours, and search for relevant articles for my chronicle. It is amazing what you can discover there about the tram, the cathedral, the jury court building or the fire brigade".

Background Information

As part of the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, the Naumburger Tageblatt is today one of the most important local and regional press organs in southern Saxony-Anhalt. The newspaper, which was re-established under this name in 1990, has several predecessors dating back to the early 19th century.

The Naumburger Kreisblatt, founded by Carl Peter Lepsius, District Administrator of Naumburg and nestor of Saxony-Anhalt's regional history, first appeared as a supplement to the Naumburger Anzeiger in 1821. Two years later it was merged with the Naumburger Wochenblatt, which had been published by Heinrich Klaffenbach since 1812, to form a common format. Between 1849 and 1851 the newspaper, now managed by the publisher Heinrich Sieling and with a new counting of the volumes, appeared as "Der Deutsche Bürger. Kreisblatt für Stadt und Kreis Naumburg", since 1852 again as "Naumburger Kreisblatt für Stadt und Kreis Naumburg". The paper was first published twice a week, later daily until 1911. In 1912 the "Naumburger Tageblatt" became a regular daily newspaper, which was published in Naumburg until 1944.

In the context of a cooperation project of the United Chapters Foundations, the City of Naumburg and the Thuringian University and State Library (Thüringische Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek, ThULB), funded by the Springer Foundation, work has been underway since 2015 on the digitalization and online indexing of the historical stocks of the Naumburger Tageblatt and its predecessors, which are preserved in extensive collections in both the Naumburg City Archive and the Cathedral Monastery Archive. The respective volumes can be browsed through individually. A total of over 75,000 pages were scanned.

With the online development of the Naumburger Tageblatt and its predecessors, the public is provided with a rich source of local and regional historical sources from the 19th and 20th centuries.
